WNTC: Backcountry Bull Trout

WNTC-Lahontan Cutthroat *Format changes based on cell phone or desktop In 2022 I completed my first Utah Cutthroat Slam  with the Yellowstone Cutthroat of the Raft River Mountains. This would be the first adventure where I would meet up with a stranger who I had never known prior to the meet up. He kindly offered to guide me for free for my completion of the slam. It was one of my roughest fishing experiences but I managed to land one tiny YCT after hours of torment and grind. Although this story isn't about that adventure, the gentleman and his brother who guided me naturally talked fly fishing for the entire drive to the mountains. One topic that was brought up was the Western Native Trout Challenge. This would be one of the first few times I heard of the WNTC and the particular story about an amazing bull trout creek in Idaho, which was one of the highlights of their success. This would also be the first time I heard of bull trout as a species in general. ...

Why Do I Seemingly Love Every Tenkara Rod?

Why Do I Seemingly Love Every Tenkara Rod I Touch? *Format changes based on cell phone or desktop As of the date of this article, I have fished 46 tenkara rods in the span of three years. Though that may not be as much as other review forums, it's safe to say that's far more than the average tenkara rod owner will cast in that course of time. However this isn't a humble brag or an opportunity to boast. In fact, reviewing rods on my channel is something of an accidental evolution and one that is rather grandfathered into my routine by this point. Am I really a rod reviewer though? The answer is a bit of yes and no. Some of the best content creators in the industry will go through some admirable steps to review a rod. This will include the RFI (rod flex index), CCS (common cents system), rod weight, and fact checked measurements in centimeters. This is not the kind of content you find on Skiddy Fishing. Instead I approach tenkara rods in layman's terms and underwhelming f...

WNTC- Lahontan Cutthroat in Nevada

WNTC-Lahontan Cutthroat *Format changes based on cell phone or desktop Coming into 2025 , I was 50% complete with Expert Caster in the Western Native Trout Challenge. Expert Caster is one third of the entire challenge and warrants a completion certificate and a commemorative hat. The idea of catching 18 species of Trout and Char in 12 states can feel like and unreasonable and expensive burden for some and for some reason, breaking it up in thirds makes it feel possible and worthy. My wife calls that girl math.  I had set the goal to complete the first tier of the challenge by the end of the year and as per usual, had a whopping six months starting in January to develop an itinerary without over competing with family time and other YouTube goals and obligations. The idea was to start in Montana for ice off Westslope Cutthroat in May and rolling into June, we had completely missed the margin due to schedule conflicts with my uncle and myself. Rather than let that distr...

Moonlit Fly Fishing Company

Moonlit Fly Fishing Company **Format changes between cell phone and desktop** Editors Note: I am not an affiliate of Moonlit Fly Fishing and I am not sponsored or paid to state any of the article notes below. This is based on my time, money, and personal experiences with Moonlit Fly Fishing. For many new fly fishing enthusiasts, finding your first fly rod can be pretty overwhelming. After all it seems like you may inevitably buy a Sage, Orvis, or TFO rod if you truly plan to perfect the art of fly fishing. But that may be years from now or perhaps you don't see yourself spending $500-$1000 on a singular fly rod during your learning curve. At least that's my general mentality!  Working many hours with the Amazon special called Wild Waters for the better half of two years, I felt I was ready to upgrade to a reputable brand and once again found myself in the same pickle. At this time, I had purchased and dazzled with the Echo Ion XL in a 5WT but the action was not my cup of tea ...

WNTC-Bonneville Cutts in Utah

WNTC-Bonneville Cutthroat *Format changes based on cell phone or desktop* BCCT Poster- WNTC For those that take resident in any state that contributes to the Western Native Trout Initiative , they have a natural advantage to the program. As a native to Utah, the Bonneville Cutthroat are no secret to me and I take pride in our beloved state fish. However I didn't catch my first BCCT until I was in my late twenties and adventuring the Utah Cutthroat Slam for the first time. I was completely ignorant to an idea that we only had rainbow trout because they are stocked everywhere in the state. Awareness programs like the UCTS deserve so much credit for delivering passion to native trout enthusiast. Before exploration grew to passion, the BCCT seemed like a mystery to me and a remarkable achievement but after years of targeting them, I say with bias off my shoulders that this fish should be one of the easier ones to catch in the entire program. To remain humble though , it wasn't alw...

My Favorite Tenkara Flies

My Go To Flies **Format changes between cell phone and desktop** The dawn of a new Spring is here and my tenkara season is about to go full swing! Something I am admittedly neglectful of when filming YouTube videos is sharing the types of flies I am using. I often make multiple adjustments while fishing and fail to keep my viewers in the loop. This is something I am working on and I don't treat fly choice as a big secret. It's a topic that I see on Facebook often though.  A new Tenkara angler enters the community and asks publicly what fly they should use. The opinions of fly choice openly are always going to be overwhelming but when it comes down to being in a good river with a good population, there is a reason why everyone has a different answer. The trick for me when tenkara fishing is "confidence" flies. I don't often seek to match the hatch and I believe one of the pinnacles of high altitude creek fishing is you simply don't have to. Trout that are not p...
